Privacy policy

Last updated: 29 October 2026

In short
  • We don't use tracking cookies and don't show a cookie banner, because there's nothing to consent to.
  • Our visitor statistics (Umami) are anonymous and collect no personal data.
  • We only collect personal data you choose to give us โ€” for example through the contact form โ€” and only use it for that purpose.
  • We never sell your data.

1. Who we are

Nearby Pantry (nearbypantry.com) is run by Nearby Pantry, a sole proprietorship registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) under number 42004553, in the Netherlands. We are the "controller" for the personal data described below, as defined in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Questions about privacy? Use our contact form and choose "Privacy or data request".

2. What we collect and why

Visiting the website

Like every website, our servers need your IP address and basic browser information to send you the page. Our hosting provider (Google Firebase) keeps this in server logs for a short time for security and to keep the service running. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website.

The map itself is drawn from map tiles served by CARTO, which also receives your IP address when your browser loads them.

Visitor statistics

We use Umami to see how many people visit and which pages are popular. Umami uses no cookies, doesn't store IP addresses, doesn't follow you across other websites and can't identify you. It only reports totals โ€” such as page views, referring websites, countries and device types. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in understanding how the website is used.

Contact form

When you send us a message we receive your name, email address, the topic and your message. We use these only to answer you. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in replying to people who contact us. We delete messages once they're dealt with, and at the latest 12 months after we receive them.

Adding a listing or suggesting a change

When you add a listing or suggest an edit, you can leave your email address so we can contact you about it. We keep it while we review your submission and delete it at the latest 12 months afterwards. The business information you submit (name, address, opening hours and so on) is published on the website once approved.

Reviews and photos

Reviews (a star rating, your comment and, if you give one, your name) and photos are published publicly once approved by a moderator. Uploaded photos are re-saved in our own format, which removes hidden information such as the GPS location your camera may have stored. Please don't upload photos in which other people are recognisable. We keep reviews and photos for as long as the listing is on Nearby Pantry, unless you ask us to remove them.

Address search and "show my location"

On the map, "show my location" uses your browser's location only on your own device, to centre the map. It isn't sent to us or stored. When you search for an address or use your location on the "Add a listing" form, the search text or map position is sent to Nominatim (run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation) to find the address.

Information about businesses

Our listings describe businesses: farm shops, markets, wine farms and so on. This information comes from public sources such as OpenStreetMap and the businesses' own websites, and from visitors. Where a business is run by one person, details such as its name, address or phone number can count as personal data. We publish them on the basis of our legitimate interest in helping people find local food. Business owners can ask us at any time to correct or remove their listing.

3. Cookies and storage on your device

We don't use advertising or tracking cookies. To make the site load faster, your browser keeps a copy of listing data in its local storage (IndexedDB). That's a purely functional use, so under Dutch law it needs no consent. You can clear it at any time in your browser settings.

4. Who we share data with

We only share data with the service providers we need to run Nearby Pantry:

  • Google (Firebase) โ€” hosting, database and photo storage. Our database is located in the Netherlands. Google may process some data in the United States under the EUโ€“US Data Privacy Framework.
  • Umami โ€” anonymous visitor statistics.
  • CARTO โ€” map tiles.
  • OpenStreetMap Foundation โ€” address search (Nominatim).

We never sell personal data, and we don't share it with advertisers.

5. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

  • see what personal data we have about you;
  • have it corrected or deleted;
  • limit or object to how we use it;
  • receive it in a portable format.

To use any of these rights, contact us. We'll reply within one month. If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.

6. Security

All traffic to Nearby Pantry is encrypted (HTTPS). Only the moderator can read contact messages and submissions that haven't been published.

7. Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle data โ€” for example when we introduce paid listings โ€” we'll update this page and the date at the top.
